Endodontics Retreatment
In a perfect world, everyone who receives root canal therapy will be able to maintain the treated teeth for a lifetime. Unfortunately, there is a possibility of improper healing or the teeth becoming re-infected, which can lead to serious disease and discomfort.
WHY DO I NEED ENDODONTIC RETREATMENT?
Improper healing after an initial root canal is one reason for endodontic retreatment. Here are some circumstances that can occur:
- The placement of the dental crown or restoration was delayed too long following the root canal.
- Extremely narrow or curved canals that were not treated during the initial root canal.
- The restoration did not successfully prevent inner contamination from saliva.
- Complicated anatomy in the canal(s) went undetected by the dental team.

HOW DOES ENDODONTIC RETREATMENT WORK?
During retreatment, Dr. Lisa will start anesthetizing your tooth with topical and local anesthetic. She will then reopen the tooth, which may involve the disassembly of existing restorative materials. The existing root filling material will be eliminated, and the canals will all be as thoroughly cleaned and disinfected as possible. We will utilize digital X-rays and our state-of-the-art surgical microscope to enhance cleaning.
Once the process is finished, gutta-percha will be reestablished in the tooth and the canals will be sealed. A temporary filling will be placed as well to protect the treated area.
